Direct answer
Android installs an APK, not an AAB, as the final installable package. An AAB is a publishing format used to generate device-specific APKs. “XAPK” is a third-party container label that may bundle an APK with extra assets and needs a compatible installer. Do not rename XAPK, ZIP or AAB files to .apk; verify and use the format the publisher documents.
What each label means
The download page should state the format before the transfer. If the extension changes after a redirect or a mirror offers an installer not mentioned by the owned route, stop and investigate.
- APK
- Android’s installable application package. It still requires a valid signature, compatible device and trustworthy source.
- AAB
- Android App Bundle used for publishing. Google Play turns bundle contents into optimized APKs; users do not normally sideload an AAB directly.
- XAPK
- A non-standard distribution label often used for an APK plus additional files. Android Package Installer does not treat the container as an ordinary APK.
- ZIP or BIN
- May be a wrong server response, browser rename or archive. Changing the extension does not make it an Android package.
Format decision checklist
